The South African Society of Animal Production (later changed to South African Society Animal Science / Suid-Afrikaanse Tydskrif vir Veekunde) has since the inception of the Society in 1961 published congress proceedings in the "Proceedings of the South African Society of Animal Production". The journal absorbed Agroanimalia. It was decided to expand these proceedings to a journal in which peer-reviewed articles on research in the country could be published. The publishing of the journal started in 1971 with volume 1. The journal appears 4 times a year and occasionally, a 5th issue is published.

The journal's area of interest is research dealing with farm livestock species (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, poultry and ostriches), as well as pertinent aspects of research on aquatic and wildlife species. The main disciplines covered are nutrition, genetics and physiology.

The abbreviated key title of the journal is S. Afr. j. anim. sci.
