The Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is a monthly journal focusing on mining and metallugy in Southern Africa. The Journal aims to provide a balanced content of a high standard which serves as a communication medium to keep members informed on matters relating to their professional interests. The articles and abstracts are in English. In 1894 the then Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa was started, a few years after the invention of the cyanide process had saved the gold mining industry in South Africa. The previously used technology of gravity separation could not economically recover gold from the fine grained ores of the Transvaal gold fields. The Institute’s Journal recorded this process and major developments in the industry and has disseminated research and technical papers ever since. In 1904 the Society was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In 2006 the name was again changed to The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in order to correctly reflect the representation of the SAIMM branches in neighbouring Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Journal’s title then changed from the Journal of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa to the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
