INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

Historia, owned and published by the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA), publishes one volume (comprising two issues) a year. The publication dates of the issues are May and November.
Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished research on aspects of southern African history, methodology, and historiography, as well as reviews, review articles, and contributions to the Historia blog.
The journal is independent and refereed, accredited by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and indexed by IBSS, IBZ and the SciELO Citation Index/Web of Knowledge (Thomson Reuters).
The journal is available from the Sabinet webpage and as an open‐access journal, at SciELO South Africa and at UP Journals.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Information on the author guidelines, the submission preparation checklist, the privacy statement and online submission process is placed on the website. We invite you to visit the journal’s website:Guidelines

ARTICLES PROCESSING CHARGES

  • Article Processing Charges (APCs) are charged by HASA.
  • Historia currently charges Article Processing Charges of R200 per regular page and R250 per colour page. These will be invoiced by the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA) on publication of the journal issue.
  • Authors will receive two print copies of Historia free of charge.
  • As Historia is an accredited DHET approved journal, the cost of an article can be recouped from the earnings on research outputs. Authors employed by South African Universities and other Southern African or other national tertiary institutions should approach their institutions on their behalf regarding subsidising their page cost for articles. Authors are not expected to pay for articles themselves.
  • A limited number of articles by non-South African affiliated accredited authors and independent scholars may (at the discretion of HASA/the editors) be published per annum. In such instance, authors may be invoiced directly by HASA.

Manuscripts Submission

  • Manuscripts should be in .doc format and uploaded via https://upjournals.up.ac.za/index.php/historia/about/submissions index.php/historia/about/submissions.
  • Authors must declare in writing that the article has not been published elsewhere or submitted to another journal for possible publication.
  • Submissions should be edited for language usage and adhere to the Historia guidelines.
  • Opinions expressed and conclusions drawn are those of the author/s and should under no circumstances be considered the opinions of the HASA, Historia’s editorial board, or the journal’s editors.
  • No single-authored articles by the same author will be published in consecutive editions of Historia. Should any of the editors wish to publish in Historia, the full editorial discretion in respect of those submissions must be delegated to another editor.
  • Manuscripts can be in English or Afrikaans.
