This article discusses the significance of the concept of the "imago Dei" for theological anthropology. Genesis 1 deliberately gives the concept an "open" meaning to make further theological reflection on the nature thereof possible. A purely pro-tological understanding of the concept is therefore insufficient. The New Testament provides the "imago Dei" with a Christolo-gical and eschatological understanding that is essential for a correct understanding of the concept as well as for the development of a theological anthropology.
