Abstract
DLAMINI, Wilson B and DUBIHLELA, Jobo. Corporate social responsibility and stakeholder engagement strategies for mining business success and community development: A conceptual framework for South African mining. JCMAN [online]. 2025, vol.22, n.spe, pp.1-31. ISSN 1815-7440. https://doi.org/10.35683/jcm24.023.289.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study explores how corporate social responsibility (CSR) and stakeholder engagement can minimise conflicts between mining companies and local communities in South Africa. These conflicts typically arise from disputes over local employment, procurement, and community representation within the mining sector DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study used a qualitative research approach and a systematic literature review. It involved analysing existing scholarly articles from Google Scholar related to stakeholder engagement and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the mining sector FINDINGS: Findings from the systematic literature review indicate that mining companies struggle with stakeholder engagement when funding corporate social responsibility projects. The findings provide valuable insights into how stakeholder engagement could be a useful approach for minimising conflicts within the mining sector RECOMMENDATIONS/VALUE: This conceptual framework is recommended to guide policymakers, mining companies, and community leaders in establishing more sustainable and equitable mining practices. By using effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) and stakeholder engagement strategies, mining businesses can enhance their success and sustainability while building stronger relationships with local communities JEL CLASSIFICATION: M14
