Abstract
BRINK, Linda. Highlights of the SA Academy for the period 2009-2025. Tydskr. geesteswet. [online]. 2025, vol.65, n.1, pp.500-518. ISSN 2224-7912. https://doi.org/10.17159/2224-7912/2025/v65n1a24.
This contribution focuses on the history of the South African Academy for Science and the Arts (Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns) since its centenary in 2009. The period prior to 2009 has already been documented in various sources, such as Hertzog and Nienaber (1950), Moll (1984) and Kapp (2009).1 In the period under discussion, i.e. from 2009 to 2025, the Academy's activities have remained fairly constant, and the Academy has continued to be faithful to its objectives, namely the development and promotion of science, technology, literature in Afrikaans, and the arts, as well as the promotion of the use and quality of Afrikaans. An overview is provided of current affairs and projects with which the Academy has been continuously involved over the past 16years, ranging from recognition of excellence, development of dictionaries, publication of two journals focusing on the humanities and the natural sciences respectively, and other publications, outreach to other Academies abroad, embracing the digital world in all its aspects, and much more.
