SIGNIFICANCE: Emotional leadership in health care emphasises the significance of a leader's ability to be empathically attuned and responsive to colleagues' feelings and needs and should be increasingly recognised as a crucial component of well-performing clinical teams. Emotional leadership in health care is a novel paradigm and speaks to the evergrowing need to address mental health, psychological and emotional safety and moral distress in medicine's complex and fast-changing environment. This article explores the concept of emotional leadership, its potential relevance to healthcare professionals, its impact on healthcare workers' well-being and its role in fostering a healthy learning environment.
