SIGNIFICANCE: Our universities can play a critical role in demonstrating how we can respond to global conflicts. Universities are, by their very nature, political and not neutral. Academic freedom is an institutional commitment to the defence of the principle in the public arena. A university that stays silent in the face of a staggering loss of human life would have to revisit their commitment to social justice.
