Note from the editor

We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden

~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) German Playwright, Poet, Novelist and Dramatist

As the 25th year of the existence of the South African Journal of Industrial Engineering (SAJIE) draws to a close, a new day has dawned for the Journal. The Journal has become an on-line, open-access publication accessible at http://sajie.journals.ac.za/pub/index. During the course of 2012, all issues from 1987 to the present were uploaded onto the new website, creating a full archive of all articles ever published in SAJIE since 1987. Previously only editions from the last few years were available electronically to subscribers to specific web services. It is hoped that this will increase the visibility of the Journal and bolster the impact factor of SAJIE even further.

One of the possibilities of on-line publishing is a reduction in the cost of producing SAJIE. With the recent growth in the membership of the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering (SAIIE), almost 700 copies of each edition of the Journal needed to be printed. Members of SAIIE will soon have the opportunity to indicate their preference for a hard or soft copy of the Journal, in all probability reducing the number of journals that need to be printed and distributed. Needless to say, those members preferring a hard copy will continue to receive the Journal in their preferred format.

The on-line functionality which has been created for SAJIE also allows for on-line submission of articles by authors and the complete management of the review process up to the publication of an accepted article. Authors and reviewers are requested to study the section on Editorial policy and instructions to authors to familiarise themselves with the new processes.

The November 2012 edition of SAJIE reaches a particular milestone in as much as having articles from more South African higher education institutions than ever before - no fewer than eight universities are represented. Five foreign countries are represented: Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, India and China. As in the special edition in July, one further article from the ISEM 2011 conference and three further articles based on presentations at the RAPDASA 2011 conference are included in this edition.

Prof Schalk Claasen has kindly contributed the guest editorial to this edition of SAJIE. Prof Claasen was the editor of SAJIE from 1999 until 2007 and undertook the initiative to get SAJIE ISI accredited during his tenure as editor. He reviews the landscape of scholarly publishing in Industrial Engineering from an international, African and South African perspective.
