Prof. Izak J.J. Spangenberg: Curriculum Vitae

 

 

 

Sakkie Spangenberg completed his BA at Stellenbosch University in 1973 with distinction after which he enrolled at the Stellenbosch Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1974. He not only completed his theological training in 1977 but obtained an Honours Degree in Semitic Languages cum laude at the University of Stellenbosch as well. He followed up the latter with a Master's degree in Semitic Languages (cum laude) in 1979 and concluded his doctoral studies at the University of South Africa in 1987 with Prof. Jimmie Loader as his supervisor. The title of his dissertation was Gedigte oor die dood in die boek Prediker (Poems about death in Ecclesiastes).

His academic career started at the former Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) where he taught Biblical Studies from 1979-1986. He took up a position of senior lecturer in 1987 at the University of South Africa in the Department of Old Testament, where he moved through the ranks to full professor, a position he held up to his retirement at the end of 2016. He served five years as head of the department and had to manage the merger of the department with the remnants of the Department of Semitics at Unisa in 2004.

In 1999 he received the UNISA Chancellor's prize for research in the former Faculty of Theology and Religion. He served quite a few years on the executive of the Old Testament Society of South Africa, first as treasurer and then as its chair from 2013-2016. He wrote five books and was co-editor of another six. He wrote 17 essays in different books and published about 50 articles in scholarly journals.
