Herrie (H. F.) van Rooy

 

Gerrie Snyman

Herrie started his career as adjunct faculty in 1975 after which he became a minister in the Reformed Churches in South Africa (Gereformeerde Kerke in Suid-Afrika). He completed his Ph.D in 1977 in which he compared the structures of extra-biblical state treaties such as the Sefire treaties with Deuteronomium. With this study he opened the gate for a cultural-historical understanding of treaties and what would be known as the covenant in the Old Testament. Moreover, he opened the door for others to utilise extra-biblical material to understand what is going on in the Old Testament in a context that was unreceptive to the use of extra-biblical material.

He did not stay a minister for long, because his acumen was soon needed. He became a senior lecturer at the then Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (now North West University, Potchefstroom Campus) where he started to teach Semitic Languages and Old Testament in 1980. In his career he served as vice-dean and as dean of the Faculty of Theology. Since 1999 he became director of the Research Unit for Reformed Theology and the Development of South-African Society. He acted as supervisor for 38 masters and doctoral students and served on four panels auditing departments at other universities.

Herrie van Rooy is a B2 NRF-rated researcher. He served on various editorial boards. He is the current editor of Koers and serves on the advisory board of Oud Testamentische Studiën, published by Brill under the auspices of Het Oudtestamentisch Werkgezelschap. He was also editor for book reviews of Old Testament Essays, the journal of the Old Testament Society of South Africa of which he was the secretary from 1992-1998 and chair from 1998-2004. He also served as member of the editing staff of the Journal for Northwest Semitic Languages and In die Skriflig.

Herrie is also very active in the different guilds to which he belonged, such as the South African Society for General Literary Studies, World Union of Jewish Studies, Society for Biblical Literature, the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, who honoured him with the Willem van Drimmelen Medal for his work. Herrie is also an active member of SASNES of which he was treasurer, additional member, and chair.

He published widely in journals and essays in books. He was co-editor of a few books and published his own book in 1999 on the Syriac Apocryphal Psalms at Oxford University Press.
