Introduction

This anniversary volume in celebration of the 70th volume of HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies is dedicated to Prof. Dr Johan Buitendag, dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria at the event of his 60th birthday on 20 November 2013.

The 70th jubilee marks the publication's 29th year under the editorship of Andries van Aarde, annually appointed since 1985, by the editorial board as the editor-in-chief. HTS celebrated its 50th jubilee in 1994. Through many changes in matters of policy, the main purpose of HTS has remained the same. HTS promotes multidisciplinary, religious, and biblical aspects of studies in the international arena and publishes original research covering three main areas: Structural subjects - Systematic Theology and Church History; Foundation subjects - Old and New Testament Studies; and Applied subjects - Practical Theology and Science of Religion. The current Johan Buitendag Dedication volume includes also the first A.S. Geyser Commemoration Lecture and a number of articles which resulted from an academic symposium on the theme 'Social Cohesion'.

HTS was founded in 1943 as a result of an international endeavour involving Dutch and South African scholars, and is the oldest theological journal in South Africa. Its historical roots date back to 1942 when the Cape Town based international Dutch company, HAUM/Du Buissy Publishing House, became the first sponsor of the initiative taken by theologians of the University of Pretoria in cooperation with scholars in the Netherlands. The Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa purchased HAUM/Du Buissy and became the title owner of HTS. Today the administration of HTS is located at the University of Pretoria as part of the infrastructure of the Reformed Theological College (founded in 2000).

Up until Volume 64 in 2008, four issues were published annually. Prof. Dr J. de Zwaan (Leiden), Prof. Dr H.W. Obbink (Utrecht) and Prof. Dr B. Gemser (Groningen) from the Netherlands played an influential role in the first editorial board together with the Dutch-born internationally renowned Old Testament and Semitic languages scholar, Prof. Dr A. van Selms. During the first four years of HTS's existence (19431947/1948), academics from the University of Pretoria who served on the editorial board, together with Professor Van Selms and the above-mentioned Dutch scholars, were Professors J.H.J.A. Greyvenstein (New Testament Studies and Practical Theology), S.P. Engelbrecht (Church History) and A.S. Geyser (New Testament Studies). At the beginning of 2009, commencing with Volume 65 of HTS, the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa entered into a publishing agreement with African Online Scientific Information Systems (Pty) Ltd (AOSIS). This company provides various services, including but not limited to the provision of scholarly publication services through its scholarly publishing division known as 'AOSIS OpenJournals'.

HTS is archived in major bibliographic databases such as: GALE, CENGAGE Learning; ProQuest; Google Scholar; SciELO SA (Academy of Science for South Africa); Elsevier Scopus; Directory of Open Access Journals; EBSCO Host; Thomson Reuters ISI (Arts and Humanities) Citation Index; SA ePublications, Sabinet; African Journals Online; ATLA Religion Database (American Theological Library Association); Bibliographical Information Bank in Patristics (Université Laval, Québec, Canada); Elenchus of Biblical Bibliography (Editrice Pontificio Institutio Biblico, Rome, Italy); International Bibliography of Periodical Literature [IBZ] (Osnabrück, Germany); International Bibliography of Book Reviews of Scholarly Literature (Osnabrück, Germany); New Testament Abstracts (Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, Chestnut Hill MA, United States of America); Old Testament Abstracts (Catholic University of America, Washington DC, United States of America); Religious and Theological Abstracts (Cambridge MA, United States of America); UPSpace (University of Pretoria, South Africa); and AOSIS OpenJournals Harvester. In the Netherlands HTS is accredited as an AA journal. On account of ISI Citation Percentage,HTS is ranked in the World Wide Web of Science amongst the five top South African journals (all disciplines included).

With its 70 year anniversary volumeHTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies pays tribute to Prof. Dr Johan Buitendag, a valued member and former chairperson of the editorial board and currently dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria. The Johan Buitendag Dedication volume celebrates Professor Buitendag's 60th birthday on 20 November 2013. In the article 'Theology as understanding reality thinking differently, acting differently: Notes about the theology of Johan Buitendag',1 written by the editor and one of his former students, Dr Tanya van Wyk, this tribute is further substantiated by reflecting on this eminent theologian's academic oeuvre.
