Abstract

WOLHUTER, Charl  and  BOTHA, Carolina. Recasting & rethinking Education 01 in South Africa: Imperatives for making education more relevant, responsive, and authentic. Journal of Education [online]. 2019, n.76, pp.5-22. ISSN 2520-9868.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2520-9868/i76a01.

Our aim in this lead article is to establish the framework of the special issue consisting of selected papers presented at the 2018 South African Education Research Association (SAERA) Annual Conference that had as its theme "Education 01? In search of a new operating system: Making education more relevant, responsive and authentic." We begin with an overview of the societal changes defining the early 21st century. We suggest that, in light of these changes, education praxis, education scholarship, and teacher education need to be re-designed with relevance, responsiveness, and authenticity if it is to meet the critical changes required.

Keywords : authenticity; education praxis; education scholarship; relevance; responsiveness; 21st-century context; teacher education.
