Abstract

BRESHEARS, Diana  and  LUBBE-DE BEER, Carien. Creating supportive learning environments: Experiences of lesbian and gay-parented families in South African schools. Educ. as change [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.2, pp.86-105. ISSN 1947-9417.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/1947-9417/2016/606.

Through in-depth interviews with 21 parents and 12 children in lesbian/gay-parented families, we explored the experiences of this unique family form in South African schools. Specifically, families reflected on their positive and negative experiences in the children's education and used these reflections to offer advice to teachers and administrators wishing better to support lesbian/ gay-parented families. The results of our study offer an understanding of the challenges and needs of this diverse family in the school system, as well as a starting point for administrators and teachers wanting to create inclusive environments for all family types.

Keywords : Inclusive education; lesbian/gay-parented families; South Africa; supportive schools.
