Abstract

LOYSON, Peter. The Activities of the Eastern Province Section of the South African Chemical Institute 1935-1965. S.Afr.j.chem. (Online) [online]. 2020, vol.73, pp.7-14. ISSN 1996-840X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/0379-4350/2020/v73a2.

This article traces the activities of the Eastern Province (EP) Section of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI) from its founding in 1935 to the formation of the University of Port Elizabeth in 1965. The EP Section was only the third Section of the Institute to be formed in South Africa and was very active with regular meetings being scheduled. These meetings dealtpredominantly with industrial and applied chemistry topics, indicating very strong interaction between industry and the Chemical Institute. Pure academic topics were presented under the auspices of the Chemistry Department of Rhodes University in Grahamstown (Makhanda). During this period, the EP Section hosted three National Conventions and produced two Presidents of SACI.

Keywords : SACI; EP Section; history; first 30 years.
