    SIGNIFICANCE: •This Commentary provides an updated picture of the contribution of female academics to university research output in South Africa over the past 16 years. •From 2005 to 2020, participation and productivity of women, and especially black women, have increased, particularly in the areas of agriculture and engineering. •Despite the substantial increases in the share of female-authored publications and participation of female academic staff, there remains a large gender gap
