    Resumen

PUGSLEY, David. Justinian's welcome to the Constantinople law school. Fundamina (Pretoria) [online]. 2018, vol.24, n.1, pp.57-68. ISSN 2411-7870.  https://doi.org/10.17159/2411-7870/2018/v24n1a3.

This paper starts with Justinian's speech welcoming the new first year law students. They will not have to study antiquae tabulae compiled by Tribonian, Theophilus and Dorotheus contrary to the emperor's wishes, but Institutes following his clear instructions. Tribonian, who originally had total delegated authority, was reduced to strict obedience to the emperor's instructions. The antiquae tabulae were preserved by adding them on at the end of the Digest after 50 15, to form titles 50 16 and 17. That explains why they have the appearance of having been tacked on at the end, and why they contain so many twin texts when repetitions were prohibited in the Digest but would have been quite suitable in a first year student work.

Palabras clave : Justinian; Institutes; Tribonian; antiquae tabulae; de verborum significatione; de regulis juris.
