This study investigates the properties of the variable sampling rate Hotelling's T² chart with runs rules. The average time to signal checking of the control chart is derived using a Markov chain approach. Numerical comparisons show that the variable sampling rate Hotelling's T² chart with runs rules performs better than the variable sampling rate Hotelling's T² chart without runs rules for small and moderate process mean shifts.
