INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope

Scriptura is an independent journal which publishes contributions in the fields of Bible, Religion and Theology refereed by peers. It is international in scope but special attention is given to topics and issues emerging from or relevant to Southern Africa. The Journal includes Editorials, Articles, Book Reviews, Summaries of Publications and Book Reviews.

Editorial Policy

  1. Due to a wider international readership, contributions should preferably be submitted in English, but other languages will also be considered.
  2. When a contribution has been published or accepted for publication elsewhere, it must be indicated.
  3. Contributions should be completely ready for printing and only those that conform to the guidelines of the journal can be accepted for consideration.
  4. Contributors are responsible for language editing. If the panel of referees advise that additional editing be done, the contribution will be referred back to the author.
  5. Priority will be given to articles of 15 A4 pages (including footnotes and bibliography) or shorter.
  6. Contributions should preferably be submitted in electronic format (MSWord).
  7. Contributions should be submitted in Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, A4 page format with a 2.5cm margin on all sides. The main text should be in 12pt letter type, and footnotes in 10pt. Italics and bold type faces are allowed.
  8. The preferred Hebrew and Greek fonts to use is "SBL True Type Fonts".
  9. The title of the article, as well as the name and institution of the contributor should be mentioned at the beginning of the article.
  10. All contributions must have a short abstract (not more than 150 words) in English (at the beginning of the article after the title and name of contributor). Additionally we require four or five key concepts to be added for the sake of indexing.
  11. Due to additional cost implications, the use of diagrams and tables should be limited to the minimum.
  12. Any recognized system of reference may be used, as long as it is done consistently.
  13. Bibliography: All titles of books and names of journals must be in italics. The titles of articles must have quotation marks [" "]. All books must have a place of publication, publisher and date of publication.
  14. The Editorial Board reserves the right to bring contributions into line with the conventions of Scriptura and to make other editorial changes.
  15. Contributions should be submitted online. Register as an Author, and follow the wizard to submit an article.

Preparation and Style of Manuscripts

To ensure the manuscript requirements are met, the following should be considered:

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single–spaced; uses a 12–point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer–reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
