The SAMJ is a monthly peer reviewed, internationally indexed, general medical journal. It carries research articles and letters, editorials, clinical practice and other medical articles and personal opinion, South African health-related news, obituaries, general correspondence, and classified advertisements.

The South African Medical Journal is published by the South African Medical Association, which represents most medical professionals in South Africa.

The first issue of the SAMJ appeared in 1884.

Its abbreviated title is SAMJ, S. Afr. med. j., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.
